We celebrated the new year with special thanks last week.

This week, we wish everyone a Happy Lunar New Year as a good portion of our team takes a well-deserved rest for 7 days starting this weekend.

I would like to take this opportunity to quickly review the plans we made back in 2022 and transparently go over what we succeeded in and what we could do better.

The original post, "RESET Plans for 2022", can be found here.

Standards and Projects

For RESET, 2022 will be the year of pilots! All five RESET Standards: Materials, Air, Water, Energy, and Circularity, are published and available for anyone to view and we are working to finalize the details through pilots. Expect all standards to be finalized before the end of the year, including an upgrade to the RESET Air Standard!

At the beginning of 2022, we officially announced that the RESET Standard expanded from RESET Air. During the year, we ran multiple pilots and we now officially have the following breakdown:

Embodied Standards

Operational Standards

2022 was the year of pilots, with a myriad of projects deployed across all the standards. The focus on performance standards continues to reveal important gaps in green buildings. A sneak-peak:

  • In reviewing embodied health, we discovered staggering quantities of red-listed chemicals in standard commercial projects.

  • There is approximately a 2x difference between the embodied carbon footprint of a new build vs. an existing build renewal.

  • When looking at the carbon footprint, operational waste is more significant than previously anticipated.

The strides made with project owners and manufacturers to quantify and close these gaps have been ground-breaking, making us ever more positive about 2023. As always, hard numbers and performance measurements are worth their weight in gold. The lessons learned from these pilots will be reflected in upcoming edits to the standards in 2023.

The RESET Cloud and Leaderboard

With all the standards in place, we are full speed ahead on software development to make sure that the entire project accreditation process is as smooth as possible. In addition, we are working on better reporting that takes into consideration all of the standards and have the benchmarking Leaderboard scheduled to go online officially in the second half of this year

With the continuous data audit, the RESET Cloud must be very robust. We have made a lot of upgrades toward system stability and uptime. We have also finished the API for Operational Standards, which officially allows the RESET Cloud to support Water, Energy, and Waste data for RESET Project Certification. Additionally, we have learned a lot about reporting from our pilots, so we will start integrating some of those ideas into the RESET Cloud reports.

On the Leaderboard front, we are in the midst of multiple Leaderboard pilots. Navigating through the multiple stakeholders, especially between landlords and tenants, has allowed us to explore how to create the most value for all parties. We are very excited about the possibilities and look forward to sharing when ready.

Educational Content and Community

We have learned a lot in the past few years from guiding projects, testing monitors, and from communication with the community. We are exploring methods to systemize the sharing of educational content in the form of case studies and planning several campaigns where we share some of that knowledge, including content around ESG, net zero, and climate change. Also, expect bonus content for our APs.

Our pilots this past year have taught us a lot and we are still in the process of organizing a lot of the new learnings. To accelerate the process of organizing and polishing these new ideas for publication, we have grown our team who will be focusing on content and will be much more active at sharing than ever before!

In the meantime, some snippets from 2022 that are worth revisiting:

For our RESET APs, Project Owners, Data Providers, and Monitor manufacturers, we are always here to support, so please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can do to help by emailing us at info@reset.build.

Wishing you the very best,

P.S. We will be publishing "RESET Plans for 2023" sometime in the next two weeks.
